She’d tracked the Relic of Sundered Skies across three kingdoms, bribing mercenaries and deciphering half-mad scholars’ journals. Now, with the map’s final cipher solved, it lay within reach. But the air tasted wrong. Too still. Too sharp. Her scout’s instincts screamed trap even as her hand brushed the rusted handle of the vault door. Behind her, Jarek muttered a curse, his lantern flickering—a dying star in the gathering dark. The mercenary had insisted on coming, his price doubling once he’d heard the relic’s name. Kaela didn’t trust his greed, but she trusted his sword. The door groaned open, revealing a chamber choked with roots that glowed faintly blue. There, atop a pedestal webbed in luminous vines, the relic hovered—a jagged shard of black crystal humming with stolen starlight. Jarek’s breath hitched. Kaela stepped forward, then froze. The roots stirred. Not roots. Tendrils. The pedestal cracked, the chamber shuddered, and the walls erupted in a chorus of skittering chitin. She barely had time to shout before the first broodling lunged.
