Produced by Pixar Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, *Turning Red* is a 2022 animated fantasy comedy set in 2002 Toronto. Directed by Domee Shi in her feature debut, with a script co-written by Shi and Julia Cho and produced by Lindsey Collins, the story centers on 13-year-old Chinese-Canadian Mei Lee (voiced by Rosalie Chiang), who navigates the chaos of adolescence while grappling with a family curse that transforms her into a giant red panda whenever emotions run high. Drawing inspiration from Shi’s own upbringing in Toronto, the project launched in 2018 after her initial pitch to Pixar in late 2017. The voice cast includes Sandra Oh as Mei’s overprotective mother, alongside Ava Morse, Hyein Park, and Maitreyi Ramakrishnan as her close friends, with Orion Lee, Wai Ching Ho, Tristan Allerick Chen, and James Hong in supporting roles. Marking a milestone as Pixar’s first film solely directed by a woman and its second to spotlight an Asian protagonist following *Up* (2009), the movie held early screenings in London’s Everyman Borough Yards on February 21, 2022, and Toronto’s TIFF Bell Lightbox on March 8. After premiering in Los Angeles at the El Capitan Theatre on March 1, it debuted globally on Disney+ on March 11, accompanied by limited theatrical runs in select markets.
