Description
The dense canopy choked sunlight into jagged shards as Noob pressed against moss-eaten bark, breath fogging in the glacial air. A twig snapped behind him—Hacker’s boots crunching closer, deliberate, smug. "Still alive, liability?" The taunt dripped with familiar venom. Noob’s fingers twitched toward the rusted dagger at his hip. *One clean throw.* But the forest’s guttural growl rumbled beneath them, a reminder: the shadows here hungered for solo prey. "Move faster," Hacker barked, shoving past. Noob’s retort died as a vine lashed from the undergrowth, barbed thorns grazing Hacker’s forearm. Crimson bloomed. For a heartbeat, raw panic cracked the hacker’s sneer. Noob lunged, slicing the vine—a brittle, alien scream echoed as it recoiled. "You’re *welcome*," Noob muttered. Hacker stared at the oozing cut, then snorted. "Lucky swing." They didn’t speak when Hacker hoisted Noob onto his back to scale the obsidian monolith, its surface humming with trapped energy. Noob’s hands trembled as he pried the first diamond from its socket, the gem’s pulse syncing with the arrhythmic beat of Hacker’s heart beneath him. "Three left," Hacker growled, shifting Noob’s weight. "Try not to… *ugh*… slip." By the fourth diamond, the facade frayed. A chasm split their path, bottomless and snarling with spectral mist. Hacker’s grip tightened on Noob’s wrist—half shove, half pull—as they leapt. Noob’s scream tangled with Hacker’s ragged laugh. They hit the ledge hard, rolling into a heap. "Still… alive," Noob gasped, clutching the final gem. Hacker’s smirk wavered. "Yeah. Somehow." The portal erupted in a maelstrom of fractured light, tearing the forest’s throat open. Hacker gripped Noob’s shoulder—anchoring, not shoving—as the void swallowed them. "Don’t. Let. Go." The command lacked its usual edge. Noob grinned, sharp and unexpected. "Wouldn’t dream of it."
