A distant whirr echoed: the lab's security drone, red eye scanning. The mouse froze, fur bristling, as the machine's spotlight swept the floor. Then—movement. A vent grate hung loose, screws corroded. It leapt, claws scraping metal, slipping through just as the drone pivoted. Beyond lay a labyrinth of ducts, stale air thick with the musk of escape.
