Description
The ice-cream truck’s jingle echoes through the street, cheerful and wrong. You’d recognize that van anywhere—rusted bumper, peeling stickers, the smell of sugar and freezer burn. But today, the man behind the counter isn’t scooping rainbow sprinkles. You watched him press a gloved hand to Charlie’s shoulder, your best friend’s laugh cutting off mid-sound as frost crawled up his neck, his face, his wide eyes locked on yours. Now the van’s engine roars, tires screeching around the corner with Charlie trapped inside a shell of ice. Your fists tremble at your sides. The neighborhood buzzes like nothing happened. But you saw the cold mist lingering where Charlie stood. You saw the driver’s smile, sharp and satisfied, as he slid the door shut. Kids vanish all the time, people whisper. Not like this.
