The air hung thick with the scent of damp stone as Kael pressed deeper into the labyrinth, his torch sputtering against the encroaching darkness. Jagged walls closed in around him, their surfaces etched with faded runes that pulsed faintly as he passed—a warning, or a test. He ignored the chill crawling up his spine and focused on the faint golden glow ahead, a siren’s call he’d crossed deserts and scaled crumbling ruins to follow. A pressure plate clicked beneath his boot. He froze, breath trapped in his lungs as razor-edged pendulums swung down from the shadows. Timing his movements to their lethal rhythm, he slid between them, the blades grazing his cloak before he rolled clear. The chamber beyond was worse: a yawning chasm spanned by a narrow bridge of crumbling bone and rot-riddled wood. Wind howled from below, carrying whispers that clawed at his resolve. *Turn back*, they hissed. *Your bones will join the others*. He stepped onto the bridge. It groaned under his weight, splinters biting into his palms as he crawled forward. Halfway across, the structure shuddered—a monstrous roar echoed from the abyss, shaking dust from the ceiling. Kael didn’t look down. He lunged the final stretch as the bridge collapsed, fingers clawing onto the ledge. Hauling himself up, he faced the last obstacle: a towering door of black iron, its surface scarred with claw marks and dried blood. At its center, a single keyhole glinted. The relic around his neck burned hot—a jagged shard of star-metal, stolen from a warlord’s tomb. He jammed it into the lock. Metal screamed as the door ground open, revealing a vault bathed in ethereal light. There it lay—the Oculus of Eternity, swirling with constellations trapped in crystal. Kael’s hand closed around it, power humming up his arm like a storm. The walls trembled, the labyrinth protesting its stolen heart. He didn’t care. Let it crumble. The treasure was his.
