The floorboard creaks under Colton’s boot as he shifts his weight, a hollow echo betraying the secret beneath. His lantern flickers, casting jagged shadows across the wall as his fingers brush a seam in the stone—cold, uneven, unmistakably deliberate. A hidden door. His breath hitches. The mechanism groans when he presses, ancient gears shuddering to life, grinding open a sliver of darkness. Stale air spills out, thick with the scent of rust and earth, but something else lingers—a whisper of melody, faint and dissonant, like a music box left to rot. His pulse thrums in his ears as he steps closer, the light revealing symbols carved into the frame: jagged, overlapping lines that twist like thorns. He’s seen these before, etched into the margins of his grandfather’s journals. Warnings. The door yawns wider, beckoning. A draft curls around his ankles, icy and insistent, tugging him forward. Colton hesitates, grip tightening on the lantern. Behind him, the study remains silent—no footsteps, no voices, just the weight of a choice. He steps through. The darkness swallows him whole, the door slamming shut with a finality that reverberates in his bones. No handle. No way back. The lantern gutters, dimming to a fragile glow as the corridor stretches ahead, sloping downward, walls slick with moisture. Distant dripping echoes, rhythmic, almost deliberate. His boots scrape against stone as he descends, each step sinking deeper into the chill. The melody grows clearer now—a mournful, looping tune, frayed at the edges. It coils around him, familiar and wrong. His name threads through the notes. Colton freezes. The light flickers again, and in the brief blindness, something shifts in the dark ahead—a silhouette, hunched and jagged, skittering just beyond the glow. He doesn’t breathe. The lantern steadies. Nothing there. But the air is heavier now, thick with the metallic tang of blood. Or iron. Or both. He forces himself forward. The corridor ends at a cavernous chamber, the ceiling lost to shadow. Pillars twist upward, carved into spirals of screaming faces, mouths agape. At the center, a pedestal holds a single object: a dagger, its blade blackened, hilt wrapped in frayed crimson thread. The music swells, sharp and urgent, as the shadows behind him begin to writhe.
