Description
Known as football in the U.S. and Canada, American football—sometimes called “gridiron” for its lined field—pits two teams of eleven players against each other on a rectangular field flanked by goalposts. Possession of the oval-shaped ball defines the offensive team, which aims to drive forward by running or throwing the ball toward the opponent’s end zone. The defensive team, lacking control of the ball, works to halt this progress and seize possession. Critical to the game’s strategy, the offense must gain ten yards within four attempts (downs) to retain control and reset their downs; failure hands the ball to the opposition. Scoring hinges on reaching the end zone for a touchdown or kicking the ball through the goalposts for a field goal. Victory goes to the team with the highest points when time expires.
