Description

The ancient forest loomed ahead, its gnarled roots twisting through the mist like serpents frozen mid-strike. Shadows clung to the canopy, swallowing the sunlight whole as a low hum pulsed through the air—a sound older than language, deeper than bone. Every step forward sank into soil that breathed, soft and wet, as if the earth itself recoiled from trespassers. Symbols carved into the bark of blackened trees glowed faintly, their jagged lines shifting when not stared at directly. Something moved in the periphery, all too deliberate to be wind, too silent to be beast. The path behind had vanished. Ahead, a stone archway stood cracked but intact, its surface etched with faces whose features blurred and melted under scrutiny. The choice was an illusion; the forest permitted no retreat. Fingers brushed the hilt of a blade, cold as the air biting into lungs with each shallow breath. Forward. Always forward. The archway’s threshold hummed louder, a vibration that bypassed ears to rattle teeth. One step. Then another. The shadows leaned closer.
