The hero stood poised on the precipice, eyes locked on the fathomless void beneath as a biting gale lashed at their face, carrying with it the gravity of the trials to come. Within the roiling fog, spectral forms twisted and swayed, their silent murmurs weaving tales of eras long buried beneath the sands of time. From the impenetrable blackness beyond, a thunderous draconic bellow reverberated through the air, its primal resonance serving as both taunt and warning to any foolhardy enough to press forward.

Description

PAC-MAN, originally released in Japan as PUCKMAN in May 1980, was developed by Toru Iwatani (born 1955) under Namco. Midway Games secured distribution rights for the U.S., launching it stateside in October 1980. At the time, arcades were dominated by minimalist space-themed shooters like *Galaxian* and *Asteroids*. PAC-MAN redefined the landscape by pioneering the maze-chase genre, cementing its status as a timeless classic and a cultural touchstone of the 1980s. Its broad appeal challenged early gaming demographics: a 1982 study suggested 60% of PAC-MAN players were female, contrasting sharply with male-dominated titles like *Omega Race*, where 90% of players were men.
